This prayer is known as The Four Immeasurables (Tib. tshad.med.pa.bzhi.) It is also called the Heart of Enlightenment because it expresses the very conditions for the Mahayana objective. The Sanskrit title of this prayer is Brahma-Vihara which refers to the base or foundation of Indian temples with their 4 levels representing the Virtues. A Buddhist chaitya or stupa (Tib. chorten) also has a base comprising four steps, but as here, in the 4-immeasurables prayer, they represent our wishes for the ultimate happiness of all beings.
